Alyse here...
There can be an endless list of things that get you down - too many sales rejections, disappointment in your latest creative project, kids consistently nagging, or an argument with your partner. Then life delivers an unexpected low blow. How do you deal with adversity?
The other morning I was in a down mood. It did not help that it was a particular time of the month… I was driving to a meeting and had intended on listening to some CD’s on marketing. My normal habit is to learn while I drive, be it career related information, inspirational speakers or public radio. I asked myself, what could I do differently? I must have been led, as it turned out, because I just happened to throw one music CD into the car on top of the fifteen "drive and learn" CD’s. I popped in the music CD and something remarkable happened.
The music started playing and tears choked out my efforts to sing along. I had forgotten how uplifting music is for me and how it allows me go inside and heal any bug-a-boos. The crux is through the music I was able to find my center, calm my fears and arrive at the meeting refreshed and ready to add value to the conversation. I did not settle for the middle ground, a band-aid of advice from others about various business related subjects, or distracting myself through current affairs. I reached higher ground by being transported musically and accessing parts of myself that would have been ignored.
An additional bonus was the music also helped me unexpectedly to generate some business related ideas.
You may ask what was the music? Well there is a line in one of the songs "Take my heart to higher ground."
Life can be easier, if you have tools at your disposal when things are not going so well. This is part of both the Third Strategy for Getting a Creative Life: Create Daily Habits of Self-care and the First Strategy: Build Self-awareness or Who are you really!
Action Step:
How do you take care of yourself when you are down? If you don’t have a few alternatives ready to go, create them.
Question:
Do you tend to distract yourself to deal with pain or do you find an avenue to move through it?

Yea its so true! I do distract myself from not dealing with pain. Sometimes though its better to leave it be, or to make change. Thanks for a great blog / Elsa
